Learning and innovation in agriculture pass through the CABs

November 13, 2018 - In front of the regional councilor Simona Caselli the Cooperative Braccianti di Ravenna presented their report, with numbers that make it the first group of farms in Europe. "We continue to invest, but now we need precise political choices in Europe".
They cultivate 10% of the agricultural area of the province of Ravenna, almost 12 thousand hectares, and employ 620 people, of which 431 are members, with revenues of 41 million euros: figures that bring the system of the 7 CABs to qualify as the main group of farms in the country. The annual report of their activities, presented to over 100 people yesterday at the Fattoria Guiccioli in Mandriole, confirmed the increase in production capacity and some strategic vocations, including seed and organic, in the presence of regional councilor Simona Caselli and of the President of the Province, Michele De Pascale, who recalled the importance of this world for Ravenna.
The CABs are focusing on organic (17.4% of land). The share of PAC contributions is reduced, in particular for integrated production, while animal welfare, organic farming, re-naturalization, precision agriculture and green energy are being targeted. In the meantime the robots have entered the stable, while the machines are driven by satellite. "We want to become a district for learning and innovation, with the cooperatives of the Romagna agri-food chain, research centers, universities, institutions", said Legacoop Romagna agri-food manager, Stefano Patrizi, commenting on the processed data from Federcoop Romagna. "The problem is that the fundamental political choices no longer pass by the states, the appeal to the democratic associative forces is to create international aggregations, at least at least at European level: the current level is not enough anymore, we need to make a step".
Words collected by councilor Caselli. "You don't have to go through landlords, your property is indivisible and managed by hundreds of members. We are committed to explaining this concept in Brussels ». Over the years the Region has intensified its relations with the other regions of the EU, also because the sword of Damocles of the new CAP hangs over a system heavily suited to export, "the CAP of 2020, which could only bring 300 million in Emilia-Romagna fewer euros out of a total 1.2 billion: what does the government say about this?
Take away resources from agriculture? It would be senseless, explained the economist Roberto Fanfani in his speech, given that in recent years the agri-food system has held up and has opposed the de-industrialization of the country. And if the cooperative system has been changed mainly by young people, the historian Tito Menzani clarified, it is necessary to react, as demonstrated by the Finnish professor Panu Kalmi, to the disappearance from the scholastic texts of the cooperative model. Well then the choice of CAB to train new members, but not enough: we need investments of all the coops. Why has no one ever thought of a film about the life of Nullo Baldini? ".
«The CABs are already contributing with their maintenance to combat climate change. Now we need a new strategic pact between our supply chains and the Region ", concluded the president of Legacoop Romagna, Guglielmo Russo. "We need to think about the critical mass: 600 workers and almost 12 thousand hectares cultivated, but to compete in Europe it is not enough: we need to reason on a resumption of aggregations at national and European level.
